According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the driver of a Toyota Camry was traveling westbound when he entered the eastbound lane, and the driver of a Ford Explorer tried to avoid a collision before the vehicles struck each other. The Camry driver sustained fatal injuries, while the 34-year-old Explorer driver was life-flighted to a Rapid City hospital with serious injuries. The Explorer's passengers — a 35-year-old Hermosa woman and two 7-year-olds — sustained minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and an investigation is ongoing.
