Sports in Hobart, Indiana: A 93-year-old Gary man, Howard Tompkins, was killed Wednesday morning in Hobart when the 2004 Dodge Caravan he was driving eastbound on 3rd Street went around active railroad crossing gates, lights, and a train horn and collided with a freight train. The Hobart Fire Department extinguished the resulting fire and recovered a body from the vehicle. The Lake County Coroner ruled the manner of death an accident, with cause pending. The crash occurred about 8:50 a.m. near the 3rd Street and Colorado/Wisconsin Street intersections and prompted an investigation by the South Lake County Crash Reconstruction Team.
