Pedestrian Hit New York Today in New York: Michael Gontar, 42, was charged on Wednesday, nearly three months after he allegedly struck 44-year-old Cherry Cayetano Sobel near Ocean Avenue and Avenue O in Midwood in a fatal hit-and-run involving an ambulance. Surveillance video shows the ambulance turning onto Ocean Avenue as Sobel stepped into the street to cross. Paramedics transported Sobel to Maimonides Medical Center, the hospital that owned the ambulance; the EMT crew was suspended. Gontar faces charges of failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care and is in police custody.
