Car Crash Wilkes North Carolina in Wilkes, North Carolina: A 21-year-old man died after a head-on crash on the morning of July 1, 2026, on NC 16 North in Wilkes County, North Carolina. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a 2025 Honda Civic driven by Obaldo Basaldua-Acevedo was traveling north on NC 16 when it crossed left of center and struck a 2008 Ford Ranger head-on in the southbound lane near Elisha Staley Road. Basaldua-Acevedo was extricated and taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the Ford Ranger, 60-year-old Martin Harry Halvorsen, was also extricated and taken to the same hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers said no charges will be filed.
