Car Crash Plane Alaska in plane, Alaska: Michael Grimes, a 51-year-old pilot from California, died when his Piper Pacer aircraft crashed near Kanak Island on June 18. Alaska State Troopers were notified the plane was overdue en route from Yakutat to Fairbanks, and search crews from the Alaska Air National Guard and Alaska Wildlife Troopers located the wreckage about 40 miles southeast of Cordova around 4 p.m. Grimes' body was recovered from the aircraft and transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Anchorage.
