Vehicle Fire East Palestine Ohio in East Palestine, Ohio: In February 2023, dozens of cars on a Norfolk Southern train derailed and burned in East Palestine, Ohio, releasing a towering fireball and a stew of toxic chemicals including dioxin and volatile organic compounds. A new peer-reviewed pilot study by University of Kentucky researchers found that blood samples drawn six months after the derailment from East Palestine residents showed signs of chronic inflammation, altered cell counts, and immune systems still responding to toxic chemical exposures. One resident, Jessica Boersma, a chiropractor, was seriously exposed and subsequently experienced gall bladder pain, irregular menstrual cycles, elevated cortisol levels, and itchy throat and nose symptoms.
