Car Crash Alpine Texas in Alpine, Texas: A head-on collision east of Alpine, Texas killed 28-year-old Erik Alberto Hernandez of Monahans and critically injured Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Zachary Vasquez, 26, of Alpine. According to DPS, Hernandez drove into the eastbound lane for reasons unknown at the time and collided head-on with Trooper Vasquez's patrol vehicle. Vasquez was transported by helicopter to University Medical Center in El Paso in stable condition with serious injuries, while Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene. A DPS K-9 inside the patrol vehicle was not injured.
