Driver arrested in fatal hit-and-run: Fort Lauderdale police

Bicycle Crash Fort Lauderdale Florida in Fort Lauderdale, Florida: Fort Lauderdale police arrested Don Janea Lashay Smith, 22, in a hit-and-run that killed bicyclist Shelley Lewis, 68, on the Southeast 17th Street Causeway Bridge on the morning of June 25, 2026. Lewis was riding eastbound in the bicycle lane around 6:40 a.m. when a car struck her. Paramedics transported Lewis to Broward Health Medical Center, where she died. Smith is being held at the Broward Sheriff's Office main jail on charges of failing to remain at the scene of an accident involving death and evidence tampering.
