Drowning California Today in California: Two Opus Dei members, Matthew Anthony and Matthew Schoenecker, drowned in June 2025 while attempting to rescue a friend in cold waters during a hiking trip in Northern California. The friend they were trying to save also drowned. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission announced on June 22 that both men will receive the Carnegie Medal posthumously for their heroic act.
