Pedestrian Hit Newark New Jersey in Newark, New Jersey: Two New Jersey women were fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver while walking across the intersection at Park Avenue and North 7th Street in Newark on June 20, 2026, after leaving a World Cup watch party. Surveillance video captured the driver barreling through the intersection, sending the women airborne. Both victims were transported to University Hospital Newark, where they were pronounced dead. The suspect, 26-year-old David J. Zapata-Vera of Newark, surrendered to police three days later and was charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, two counts of second-degree leaving the scene resulting in death, and two counts of third-degree endangering an injured victim.
