Pedestrian Hit Washington Today in Washington: A 63-year-old driver, identified as James G. Bernhardt, struck and killed a pedestrian at 9200 North Newport Highway in Spokane at approximately 4:15 a.m. on June 24, 2026, then fled the scene. The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene. Four days later, Bernhardt turned himself in to the Spokane Police Department and was booked into the Spokane County Jail for hit and run involving a fatality. He told police he believed he had hit garbage in the road and panicked after realizing he had struck a pedestrian.
