Carrero boarded the train, picked up a piece of paper, lit it, and used it to ignite the sleeping victim, whose clothing quickly caught fire inside the moving subway car. The victim suffered critical burns and extensive scarring; prosecutors said his survival was a matter of chance. The case was prosecuted federally because the subway system receives federal funding.
